Mindbuilders Preschool prep students launch a book to benefit P.A.W.S.
- What the world needs now, more than ever before, are everyday heroes who are ready, willing and able to make a difference.
When children make an effort to help the community with just their creativity and writing skills as their tools, they are already developing their potential to become heroes at a young age.
Such can be said of three Prep students from Mindbuilders Preschool in Las Piñas. Six-year olds Angel Endencia, Antwone Ong and Cody Villamor used their imagination to pen original legends about animals that they had seen or read about as part of a lesson in literacy and writing. Their teacher found the stories so creative and humorous, the three children were requested to write another set. Their ideas were just too good to file and keep separately, so it was decided to bind the stories into one volume - keeping the original illustrations and maintaining the children’s emergent writing styles (invented spelling and all).
What to do next? The three Prep pupils were excited to make more copies of their book and even sell it - but for what cause? When they learned that a shelter for animals existed within Metro Manila, they thought it would be a good idea to raise funds for it. Together, the Prep kids wrote a letter to the school’s parents asking for their help to purchase copies of their book and raise funds for their advocacy -The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.).
The school got in touch with P.A.W.S. program director, Anna Cabrera, who graciously agreed to come all the way from Quezon City to Las Piñas just to meet the young authors and receive the funds raised for the animal shelter. Welcoming “Teacher” Anna and the P.A.W.S. volunteers, Angel, Antwone and Cody formally launched their book “A Treasury Of Animal Legends”. Together with the rest of the Mindbuilders Preschool children, they listened to Teacher Anna as she told them stories of abandoned pets that were brought to the shelter, and those that were rescued from calamities. The kids were thrilled to meet Tanya, one of the shelter’s dogs, who was rescued from Typhoon “Ondoy”.
An initial donation of three thousand five hundred pesos inside a “doggy” bank was presented to the visitors from P.A.W.S. The children hope to continue raising funds for P.A.W.S. now that they know even more about it. Their project was just a small idea in the beginning, but with the support of their teachers and parents, it grew into something big.
To order and purchase copies of the book “A Treasury of Animal Legends” (P60/copy) contact Mindbuilders Preschool at 825-7419. Proceeds from the purchase of the book will go to the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.). Mindbuilders Preschool is located at 168 Tropical Avenue, BF Homes International, Las Piñas City.
